Diabetes Mellitus Tests to Establish the Diagnosis

Are you suffering from any of the following symptoms: Polyphagia, Polydipsia, excessive hunger, Polyuria (frequent urine) or Pruritis? You may also feel tired and sleepy easily. You may have close relatives with diabetes, such as your mother or father, an uncle, and so on. Diabetes mellitus is something you need to be aware of. To establish a solid diagnosis, you should visit your doctor. He may also send you for a test to check your blood sugar levels.

To determine if you have diabetes, there are several tests. These tests include:

#1 – Fasting Plasma Glucose Test (FPGT). This test measures your blood sugar levels. Before taking your blood sample, you will need to fast for at least 8 hours. This is done so that you can fast in the evening, and your blood sample will be taken in morning. This will tell you if you are in the early stages of diabetes.

#2 – Oral glucose tolerability test (OGTT). This test measures your blood glucose levels in 2 stages. The first stage is similar to the FPGT. This involves taking your blood after a fasting period that is at least 8 hours. After you have completed your blood draw, you will be asked if you would like to drink some syrup (sugar diluted with water). After two hours of drinking, the second blood sample is taken. This will confirm the diagnosis of diabetes and pre-diabetes.

#3- Random plasma glucose test.Your glucose level can be checked at any time, no matter when you last ate. This test is combined with an evaluation for other symptoms like the 4Ps above, are used to diagnose diabetes, but not pre-diabetes.

These three tests are positive and should be repeated on another day to confirm the results.
