Ketogenic Diets For Managing Type 2 Diabetes

Since 1924, children have used ketogenic diets to treat epilepsy. A ketogenic diet (or keto) is one that is high-fat and low-carb. The ketogenic diet shifts the body’s metabolism fuel from burning carbs to fats. The keto diet allows the body to metabolize fat instead of sugar into energy. As a result, ketones are produced.

The ketogenic diet has been widely used over the years to treat diabetes. It treats diabetes at the root by lowering carbohydrate intake, which leads to lower blood sugar. This in turn lowers insulin, which reduces insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. A ketogenic diet can improve blood glucose (sugar) while also reducing insulin use. The ketogenic diet is safer than injecting insulin to combat high carbohydrate food intake.

The keto diet is a strict diet. The classic keto diet, for instance, provides approximately 80 percent of your daily caloric needs from fat and only 20 percent from carbohydrates and proteins. This is a significant departure from the normal where energy is obtained from sugars from carbohydrate digestion. Instead, the body must use fat to fuel its needs.
